Who is your superhero?
Superheroes don’t just wear capes. They are the Everyday people that do extraordinary things. They go about their business quietly day by day. Most people wouldn’t even notice them or certainly wouldn’t think of them as superheroes, but they are.
There are of course the big 3….. police, doctors and firefighters……do you not think they are superheroes? The police and firefighters put their lives on the line each and every time they wear their uniforms. It has always been so but in this ever increasing world of violence, they are constantly at risk. The rate around the world of police being attacked and killed is higher than ever. They have chosen to uphold the law and to serve and protect, yet they need as much protection as the public do these days.
Firefighters have always risked their lives but with the increase of drug labs and the chances of them blowing up in their faces it is more dangerous than ever.
You may wonder why I have listed doctors as putting their lives on the line…….they save lives, right? Yes they do, but front line doctors in emergency rooms around the world are as vulnerable to attacks on their lives as the police and firefighters. It’s not just the occasional angry drunk anymore, it’s the highly addicted patient on the latest street drug, crazed out of their mind wielding a knife or a gun…….an emergency room is not always the safest place to be for medical staff and patients alike.
Then we have our nurses…….yes, they really are the superheroes of our hospitals. They care for the medical needs, sure that’s their chosen field…….but along with that comes the abuse they take so often from patients and their concerned relatives. Most of the time it is out of fear but it happens nonetheless. Nurses are truly the angels of our hospital systems. Working right along side our nurses are the volunteers, they choose, for no payment, to come into the hospitals to make a difference, that definitely hits my superhero radar.
In the community there are care workers, foster carers, charity teams both paid and unpaid that make a difference. Some you know about but there are others you’ll never hear about but make no mistake they are there. Feeding the homeless, caring for our disabled or the most upsetting of all…..the unwanted babies and children. These are the quiet superheroes that want nothing but for others to feel loved, fed, warm and most of all wanted. Hats off to you.
Teachers are superheroes too. Would you want to deal with a room full of unruly children? I know I wouldn’t !!! They are the ones that not only teach the skills of reading, writing, science, history…….but they reinforce manners, respect, responsibility. Sometimes they are the only ones in a child’s life to care…..think about that for a moment. We all know there are children out there that come from horrible home lives……..the teachers in that child’s life not only teach what’s necessary but they give what’s needed. So the next time you start to complain about a teacher and you think they are already paid way too much, think again.
There are of course superheroes in every family……mums, dads, grandparents. Every family needs a superhero. In my family it is definitely my MUM!!! But my dad and grandparents were right up there with her.
My daughter is a superhero to me…….twin boys, she definitely deserves a cape!
My son, fighting all his mental health issues each and every day, not always easy and not always silently but fight them he does.
My littlest son is a definite superhero in my eyes, he has had to deal with a break up, my breakdown and living away from me because of it all…..my little hero.
In 12 months time, my grandsons will be 4, I can’t believe how quickly that has come around…… they will think they are or will want to be superheroes…..I wonder which one it will be?
Through all of it has been my Mum the superhero, keeping it all together. Have I always agreed with her…..no, but as I’ve aged I’ve come to understand her choices and why she has made them. LOVE……every choice my mum has made has been out of love. Love for her family and love for me. I spent many years being a rebel, shhhhhh……don’t tell her I said that, like all children, I have continued to deny it…..but I was. However, now as a parent and grandparent I get it. I would move heaven and earth for my children and my grandies……they are my world.
If you look back over all the superheroes I have mentioned they all do what they do out of love. I know there are many, many more silent superheroes I haven’t mentioned or even know nothing about…..if you have a superhero in your life, give them a shout out and let them know how thankful you are.
It is Mother’s Day here in Australia today…..so I know there will be millions of mothers being celebrated……tomorrow it will be Mother’s Day in the Northern Hemisphere……..as a Mum I can tell you, you don’t have to go out and spend a fortune on us, a simple thank you and I love you Mum will be all we need.
I’m off now to spend the day with my mum, my son and hopefully I’ll get to see my daughter and those twinnies …….I can only hope that some day my children and my grandchildren see me as their superhero……
I would love to see some comments on this so please tell me…….
Who is your SUPERHERO??????
